Inspection Services

Inspection services examine products, parts, equipment, repairs, services, installations, and facilities to ensure quality, consistency, and condition, as well as conformance to required standards and/or procedures. Some inspection services provide condition monitoring, dimensional gaging and metrology, electronic testing, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing, flow testing, pressure testing, and failure analysis services. Others test and evaluate color and appearance, corrosion resistance, reliability and robustness, safety and liability, or radio frequency (RF) emissions. Inspection services that provide or perform mechanical and structural analysis, non-destructive testing (NDT), thermal imaging and thermography, and video inspection are also available.  

Inspection services perform a variety of auditing, certification, consulting, evaluation, and on-site inspection activities. Quality audits involve the independent evaluation of a company’s quality assurance (QA) processes and procedures. Typically, inspection services that specialize in QA audits review a company’s quality manuals and compare specific aspects of performance to third-party standards. Certification services may also verify that a company’s products, parts, processes, services or quality system comply with industrial, original equipment manufacturer (OEM), or other quality standards. Inspection services that offer consulting and training regarding testing and inspection are also available. Evaluation services may perform testing and inspection activities at their facility, or at the customers’ location. Field evaluation and on-site inspection is necessary in the case of facility accreditation, for example.  

Inspection services test, inspect and evaluate first articles, perform in-process and in-line testing, offer qualification and commissioning assessments, and produce QA manuals and procedures. First articles are pre-production or pilot-run samples evaluated to assure conformance to the specified standards, procedures and contract requirements. Contract quality assurance (QA) provider’s sample, inspect, test, or evaluate production samples, sites or facilities, processes or procedures. First article inspection and third-party QA services are often requirements for some medical or aerospace production or government contracts. Inspection services that perform in-process or in-testing so that products can be inspected in functional environments are also available. Companies that provide qualification or commissioning assessments for large facilities, capital equipment, or production plans may require an external, third-party evaluation before the project or facility is accepted. 

Inspection services differ in terms of industry applications as well as certifications and approvals. Choices for industry application include appliances, aerospace, automotive, battery, building and construction, coatings and paint, combustion equipment, drugs and pharmaceuticals, electrical distribution, food and beverage, hazardous location equipment, and health care and medical. They also include plumbing and lighting, hydraulics and pneumatics, industrial machinery, laboratory instruments and sensors, marine, materials, motors and control systems, paper and plastic packaging, piping and pressure vessels, rubber products, semiconductors, valves and pumps, and welding. Certifications and approvals for inspection services are available from a variety of national and international regulatory agencies and accreditation bodies.
